As temperatures drop across the northern states, many sailors are preparing to head south for the cruising season — and for good reason. The Bahamas offer some of the most beautiful sailing grounds on earth, with clear turquoise waters, gentle trade winds, and endless anchorages to explore.

Before casting off, take time to make sure your vessel is ready for the journey. Here’s a short checklist to get started:

⚓ **Inspect your rigging and sails** – Look for any wear or corrosion, especially around fittings and terminals.
⚓ **Service your engine and generator** – Change filters, check belts, and ensure cooling systems are clean.
⚓ **Review safety equipment** – Lifejackets, flares, fire extinguishers, and first-aid kits should all be up to date.
⚓ **Update charts and navigation apps** – Especially for shallow routes through the Exumas and Abacos.
⚓ **Provision smartly** – Stock essentials, but remember local markets in Nassau and George Town are well supplied.
